The 7 Best Catholic Alexa Skills

Have an Amazon Echo? Want it to help you live your Catholic faith? We’ve found 7 Alexa Skills you need to activate!

Wait. Who’s Alexa? Who’s Alexa?Who’s Alexa?
Is There an Echo in Here?

Echo is a line of smart speakers/home accessories from Amazon. The line includes the original Amazon Echo and the Echos Dot, Tap, Look, and Show. All Echo devices (and many some devices from other manufacturers) include Alexa, Amazon’s cloud-powered voice service, which can do all sorts of things like play music, add items to todo lists, and control the bits and pieces of smart home systems like dimming light bulbs and adjusting thermostats. Anybody can make “skills” for Alexa which enable it to do more things. These are our favorite Catholic Skills (in no particular order.)

To enable these skills on your Alexa device, use the phrase provided (“Alexa, enable…”) or click the skill’s icon to be taken to its amazon listing.

Standard Skills

Saint Quotes from Benevore

Saint Quotes

This skill—created and published by Benevore—pulls from nearly 2,000 years of widsom present in the writings of the saints. Simply have Alexa ask Saint Quotes for a quote, and she’ll read you the quote and tell you who said it.

To Get This Skill:
“Alexa, enable the Saint Quotes skill.”

To Invoke This Skill:
“Alexa, ask Saint Quotes to inspire me.”
“Alexa, ask Saint Quotes for a quote.”

Prayer Buddy

Prayer Buddy is exactly that, a buddy for you to pray with. We like using it to pray the Rosary. What’s especially nice about Prayer Buddy’s Rosary is that it’s an actual recording of someone praying instead of Alexa’s voice reading the prayers.

To Get This Skill:
“Alexa, enable the Prayer Buddy skill.”

To Invoke This Skill:
“Alexa, Open Prayer Buddy.”
“Alexa, ask Prayer Buddy to Pray the Rosary.”
“Alexa, Ask Prayer Buddy to pray the Divine Mercy Chaplet.”

Saint of the Day

Franciscan Media produces short audio biographies of saints that air on Catholic radio stations across the country. This skill allows users to hear the day’s saint or lookup saints by their patronage or feast day.

Also available as part of your ‘flash briefing’ via another skill—unfortunately with the same name—listed below.

To Get This Skill:
“Alexa, enable the Saint of the Day skill.”

To Invoke This Skill:
Alexa Ask Saint of the Day who is today’s saint?
“Alexa, Ask Saint of the Day who is the patron saint of painters?”
“Alexa Ask Saint of the Day who is the saint for October 19?”

Daily Mass Readings or Catholic Daily

These two skills are nearly identical and are produced by the same developer. They both have Alexa read the daily readings from the lectionary, and can serve up all the readings or just the Gospel. The only (mildly) discernible difference is that Daily Catholic (green icon) speaks at a slightly slower pace.

To Get This Skill:
“Alexa, enable the Daily Mass Readings skill.”
or
“Alexa, enable the Catholic Daily Skill.”

To Invoke This Skill:
“Alexa, ask Daily Mass Readings for today’s readings.”
“Alexa, ask Daily Mass Readings for today’s Gospel.”

Catholic Facts

This skill gives skills about the Vatican, the Pope, Saints, the History of Catholicism, or users can choose to be served a fact from a random category.

To Get This Skill:
“Alexa, enable the Catholic Facts skill.”

To Invoke This Skill:
“Alexa, ask Catholic Facts for a fact.”
“Alexa, ask Catholic Facts for a pope fact.”

Flash Briefing Skills

Alexa also offers a ‘Flash Briefing’ feature which assembles an update from a variety of sources the user picks. Adding the follow skills will inject some faith into your brief.

Saint of the Day

Franciscan Media’s Saint of the Day provides a short biography of that day’s saint to your flash briefing.

To Get This Skill:
Because another skill has the same name, you cannot enable this skill by asking for it. You must visit the skill’s page on Amazon (or the Alexa app) and enable it there. To do so, click the icon to the right.

To Invoke This Skill:
Ask Alexa “What’s my flash briefing?” and the Saint of the Day will be inserted in your first briefing of the day.

Catholic News – EWTN News

This skill adds audio from EWTN News Nightly to your flash briefing.

To Get This Skill:
“Alexa, enable the Catholic News skill.”

To Invoke This Skill:
Ask Alexa “What’s my flash briefing?” and EWTN News Nightly will be inserted in your first briefing of the day.

Bonus: Built-In Catholic Radio!

Just Ask!

Alexa comes with TuneIn Radio pre-loaded, which gives users access to over 100,000 radio stations from around the world, including some Catholic stations.

Catholic radio is like your friend who’s really knowledgeable about the faith. You can dial him up, listen and hear something cool. And a lot of shows take listener questions, which is always awesome.

We’re partial to Spirit Catholic Radio from Omaha, Nebraska because they select the best shows available from dozens of content creators and assemble their own custom schedule. (And Benevore is a production of Spirit Catholic Radio, but seriously, they play some great stuff!)

To Listen to Catholic Radio:
“Alexa, play Spirit Catholic Radio.”

These skills are great examples of bringing the Church into the streets to meet people where they are and make the faith a part of our everyday lives.

If this has made you interested in getting an echo, you can learn about the various models on Amazon.

If you’ve been inspired to make your own Catholic Alexa skill, Amazon has many tutorials available.
